The idea

Six ways of registering care, ranked.

People do not all register care the same way, and most friction about it is a mismatch rather than a shortage. Someone can be putting real effort into showing they care in the way that would land for them, and have almost none of it reach the person opposite. This assessment ranks six ways of registering care by making you choose between them, which is the only way to get a ranking when every option is something you would say yes to.

What is measured

The 6 dimensions underneath the labels.

Words

Being told, explicitly, what someone values about you.

Higher
Unspoken appreciation does not reach you. You need it said, and when it is said you remember it for years.

Time

Undivided attention, with nothing else competing for it.

Higher
Someone half-present is worse than someone absent. What registers is being the only thing in the room.

Action

Someone doing the thing rather than offering to.

Higher
You read effort as the evidence. An offer to help lands nowhere near as hard as the help arriving.

Closeness

Presence, physical or emotional, especially when it is hard.

Higher
Someone staying is the whole message. What they say while staying matters much less.

Tokens

Something chosen, kept or marked, that proves you were thought about.

Higher
The object is not the point. The evidence that you were in someone’s mind when you were not there is the point.

Backing

Being defended or advocated for when you are not in the room.

Higher
Loyalty in your absence counts for more than warmth in your presence. You want to know whose side someone is on.

How this compares

Connection Styles and The 5 Love Languages.

If you already know The 5 Love Languages, this is a different framework that answers a similar question. Here is how they differ.

  • Six dimensions rather than five. The additional one, Backing, covers being defended or advocated for when you are not in the room, which has no counterpart in the original.
  • Built for work as well as for relationships. Connection Styles applies to a manager, a colleague or a friend, not only to a partner.
  • Forced-choice rather than an agreement scale, so it produces a genuine ranking instead of high scores on everything.
  • Crystal has no affiliation with, and no endorsement from, the owners of the original framework. This is an independent alternative, not an authorised version of it.

Method

What this test cannot tell you.

Every assessment has limits. Most sites leave them out. Ours are listed because a result you can calibrate is worth more than one you cannot.

  • This is a preference typology, not a validated psychometric instrument. It has no published reliability or validity evidence behind it, and it should not be read as though it does.
  • Your ranking shifts with context and with the relationship. What you need from a partner, a parent and a manager are often different, and this gives an average.
  • A forced choice between two good things exaggerates the gap between them. Your top and bottom are meaningful; adjacent middle rankings are close to noise.
  • Knowing someone’s ranking does not tell you what they need right now. It is a starting point for asking, not a substitute for it.

Questions

About the connection styles test.

Is this the 5 Love Languages test?
No. The 5 Love Languages is a registered trademark of Moody Publishers and this is not it, nor an authorised version of it. Connection Styles is an independent framework with six dimensions rather than five, built for work as well as relationships. Crystal has no affiliation with or endorsement from the owners of that framework.
What are the six connection styles?
Words, Time, Action, Closeness, Tokens and Backing. The last one, being defended or advocated for when you are not in the room, has no counterpart in the better-known five-category framework and is the one that transfers most directly to working life.
Why does it make me choose instead of rating each one?
Because every option here is something almost everyone would say yes to. Asked whether you feel cared for when someone gives you their full attention, nearly everyone agrees, and a rating scale in this category produces people scoring high on all six and learning nothing. Forcing a choice between two good things is the only way to get a real ranking.
How long does it take?
30 paired questions, about 5 minutes. Free, no signup, nothing saved to an account.
Is this scientifically validated?
No, and we are not going to imply otherwise. This is a preference typology with no published reliability or validity evidence behind it. It is a useful structure for a conversation about what people need from each other, which is a different claim from being a psychometric instrument.
Can my connection style change?
Your ranking shifts with context and with the relationship. What you want from a partner, a parent and a manager are often different, and this gives you an average. The top and bottom of your ranking are the stable parts; the middle moves.
