Your Ideas, Interests & Passions

Your Ideas, Interests & Passions asks how you learned what you know, what the teachers and coaches who mattered gave you, and which books, films, music and pursuits stayed with you. It is the part of your background a résumé leaves out.

What it asks

How you learned, the teachers who mattered, and the books, music and pursuits that stayed with you.

  • How you learned what you know: school, training, or teaching yourself
  • What the teachers and coaches who mattered gave you
  • Which books, films, music or ideas stayed with you, by name if you like
  • What runs through your life outside of school and work

The things you chose

Family and hometown happen to you. The books you reread, the music you came back to and the thing you did every weekend at fifteen were choices, and they say something about you that your circumstances cannot.

They also last. The interests that run through someone’s life tend to show up again in the work they enjoy and the work they are good at, often in forms they would not recognise at first.

And they fade quietly. Which of them are still part of your life is usually the question people find most useful, because the answer is so often fewer than they thought.
