Crystal

Once a year

The annual check-in

Once a year, on a day you choose, Crystal asks about the year as a whole: who you were in it, what it cost you, and who you want to be in the next one. It is the only assessment that takes more than one sitting.

What it asks

The year as a whole, who you were in it, and who you want to be next.

  • What the year was, in the parts you would tell someone about
  • Who you were during it, against who you expected to be
  • Who you want to be next year, specifically enough to check

Why not on 1 January

New Year resolutions are made by a version of you on holiday, about a life you will return to in a week. The date is arbitrary and the mood is unrepresentative, which is a poor combination for a decision meant to last twelve months.

A day you choose is better, and your birthday is the default because it is the one date already about the passing of a year for you specifically. It also spreads the reviews across the calendar instead of bunching everyone into January.

The year is too big for one sitting, so this one stays open for two weeks and comes in four parts. An assessment you can leave and come back to is one you will finish.

How Crystal asks it

Inside the product.

  • Four parts, open for two weeks, on your birthday unless you change it.
  • It reads from every check-in you answered during the year, so it is not asking you to remember March.
  • The memo it produces is free.
