Your Key People

Your Key People asks who raised you, who else shaped you growing up, and who is closest to you today. The result is the short list of people who made you who you are, and which of them are still part of your life.

What it asks

The people who shaped you, family and otherwise, and which of them are still with you.

  • Who was involved in your upbringing: parents, grandparents, siblings, other relatives or someone else
  • Where you fell among your brothers and sisters, if you have them
  • Who else influenced you growing up: a teacher, a coach, a mentor or a close friend
  • Who the people closest to you are today, by name if you like

Personality is learned from people

The way you argue, the way you encourage someone, the thing you say when a plan falls apart: most of it was picked up from a specific person, usually without either of you noticing.

Naming those people turns a vague sense of how you were raised into something specific enough to think about. A grandparent who never complained and a coach who believed in you are different influences, and they pull in different directions.

It also shows who is still around. The people who shaped you and the people closest to you now are rarely the same list, and the overlap says a lot about what you have chosen to keep.
