The idea

Two lines, not four boxes.

Attachment research describes two independent dimensions rather than a set of boxes: how much you worry about a relationship holding, and how comfortable you are depending on someone. Where you sit on those two lines is the real result. The four named styles below are the four corners of that space, and they are a convenience for talking about it rather than four different kinds of person.

What is measured

The 2 dimensions underneath the labels.

Attachment anxiety

How much attention goes to whether the relationship is secure.

Higher
You notice shifts early and you want them resolved. Distance registers as a question that needs answering, and reassurance genuinely helps.
Lower
You assume the relationship is fine unless told otherwise, and a quiet stretch does not read as a signal.

Attachment avoidance

How comfortable closeness and depending on someone feel.

Higher
You handle things yourself first. Closeness is something you regulate rather than something you seek by default.
Lower
You move toward people when something matters, and depending on someone does not feel like exposure.

Method

What this test cannot tell you.

Every assessment has limits. Most sites leave them out. Ours are listed because a result you can calibrate is worth more than one you cannot.

  • This measures how you relate to people now, not what happened to you as a child. Attachment patterns shift with circumstance and with individual relationships.
  • Your style can differ between a partner, a parent and a manager. This asks about close relationships generally, so it reports an average.
  • The two scores are more informative than the label. Someone just over a line and someone far past it get the same name and are not in the same position.
  • This is not a clinical instrument and it does not diagnose anything.

Questions

About the attachment style test.

What are the four attachment styles?
Secure, anxious (also called anxious-preoccupied), avoidant (dismissive-avoidant) and fearful-avoidant (sometimes called disorganised). They are the four corners of two underlying dimensions: how much you worry about a relationship holding, and how comfortable you are depending on someone.
How long does the attachment style test take?
24 questions, about 4 minutes. There is no signup and nothing is saved to an account.
Can your attachment style change?
Yes. Attachment patterns are responses to circumstances rather than fixed traits, and they shift with experience, with therapy, and with being in a relationship with someone whose pattern differs from yours. This test measures how you relate to people now.
Is this the same as the ECR-R?
No. The ECR-R is the standard research questionnaire and it may not be used commercially without permission from its authors, so none of its wording appears here. This test uses its own questions, measuring the same two dimensions the research describes.
Which attachment style is most common?
Published research generally finds secure attachment to be the largest group at around half of adults, with avoidant next, then anxious, then fearful-avoidant as the smallest. Figures vary between samples and between the ways researchers define the categories.
Does attachment style matter at work?
It does, and it is the part most tests skip. Attachment predicts how someone behaves when a working relationship is under strain: who escalates, who goes quiet, who needs the situation resolved before they can move on. Each result page here has a section on it.
