Connection Styles

Backing, whose side are you on.

Loyalty when you are not in the room.

Values loyaltyWatches what happens in your absenceWarmth alone is not enough

You register care as advocacy. Someone defending your decision in a meeting you were not in, or correcting a person who has you wrong, is worth more to you than any amount of warmth to your face.

This is the dimension that does not exist in the better-known five-category framework, and it is the one that transfers most directly to working life.

Strengths

What this style is good at

People who need backing are usually reliable at providing it, which makes them valuable allies.

Challenges

Where it costs you

The difficulty is that a single failure to back you outweighs a long history of warmth.

  • You defend people who are not there to defend themselves
  • You make sure credit lands where it belongs
  • You will say the unpopular thing if it is the accurate one
  • People learn that you are consistent whether or not they are watching
  • One moment of silence when you needed support can end your trust in someone
  • You may test loyalty without meaning to, or realising you are doing it
  • Pleasant people who do not advocate for you can feel like a betrayal rather than a limitation

At work

How this shows up in a working relationship.

This is the most work-relevant of the six, and the least often discussed.

  • A manager who is warm in your one-to-one but does not defend your work upward will lose you
  • You will notice, and remember, who spoke up when a decision of yours was questioned
  • You are the colleague people want in the room when their work is being discussed
  • Say this directly in a one-to-one. It is a reasonable thing to want and most managers have never been asked for it

Growth

What actually helps.

The work is calibration, because the standard here is unusually absolute.

  • 01

Check what someone actually could do

Silence in a meeting is sometimes a lack of standing rather than a lack of loyalty. The two look identical from outside.

  • 02

Say what backing would look like

Most people will advocate for you willingly. Very few will work out unprompted that it is the thing that matters most.

  • 03

    Notice the all-or-nothing reflex

One failure to back you is information. It is rarely the whole picture, and treating it as final is the cost of this style.
