The five traits
Five ranges, not one type.
Every trait is a continuum and almost everyone lands somewhere in the middle of most of them. That is why Big Five gives you five scores rather than a label, and it is the main reason it holds up in research where type-based frameworks do not.
- OOpennessAppetite for new ideas, abstraction and experience over the familiar.
- CConscientiousnessOrganisation, follow-through and the pull toward doing things properly.
- EExtraversionWhere energy comes from, and how much stimulation feels comfortable.
- AAgreeablenessCooperation and trust, against directness and scepticism.
- NEmotional stabilityHow reactive you are to stress, and how quickly it passes.
Questions
About the Big Five test.
- What are the Big Five personality traits?
- Openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability, sometimes remembered as OCEAN. Each is a continuous dimension rather than a category, so the result is five scores rather than a type.
- Is the Big Five more accurate than MBTI or DISC?
- It has the strongest research support of the common frameworks, and it predicts outcomes like job performance and wellbeing better in published studies. Worth knowing: across 25,730 accuracy ratings on Crystal, people rated Big Five results slightly LOWER for felt accuracy than DISC or Enneagram. How accurate something feels and how well it predicts are different properties.
- How long does the Big Five test take?
- About five minutes. Free, and you can see your results without paying.
- Why is it called OCEAN?
- It is an acronym of the five trait names. Some versions use neuroticism in place of emotional stability, which is the same dimension scored in the opposite direction.
