Career Interests
Realistic, the builder.
You want the work to produce something real.
Your strongest pull is toward work with a physical result: something built, fixed, grown or made to run. The satisfaction is in the thing existing at the end of the day.
This is the interest area most poorly served by modern careers advice, which tends to assume everyone wants a desk.
Strengths
What this style is good at
Realistic interests come with a bias toward finishing, which is rarer than it sounds.
Challenges
Where it costs you
The friction is usually with organisations rather than with work.
- You judge work by whether it functions, not by how it was described
- You are comfortable with the parts of a job other people avoid
- You spot the practical flaw in a plan before it is executed
- You tend to be unusually calm about problems that have a physical cause
- Long planning cycles with no visible output are draining
- You may undersell work that took real skill, because the result looks obvious once done
- Meetings about work can feel like an alternative to doing it
At work
How this shows up in a working relationship.
What to look for, and what to avoid, in a role.
- Look for: a short loop between doing something and seeing whether it worked
- Avoid: roles where your output is a document that someone else acts on months later
- Fields that tend to fit: skilled trades, engineering, logistics, agriculture, manufacturing, emergency services
- Your second and third interest areas decide the flavour. Realistic plus Investigative is engineering; Realistic plus Enterprising is running a trade business
Growth
What actually helps.
The useful moves here are about visibility, not about changing what you want.
- 01
Describe the difficulty, not just the result
Work that looks straightforward when finished is systematically undervalued. Saying what was hard is not boasting, it is information.
- 02
Read your second letter carefully
It usually determines whether a Realistic role will bore you within two years.
- 03
Check the loop length before you take a job
How long between doing something and knowing if it worked? That single number predicts your satisfaction better than the title does.
The others
The rest of the framework.
Not sure this is you?
The test takes 5 minutes and gives you both scores, not just a label.
