AI coach vs therapist

These two get compared because both involve talking through your life with something that asks questions back. The difference is not tone, format or price. It is what each one is for, who is qualified to do it, and what is supposed to happen when a conversation turns serious.

A therapist treats distress and mental health conditions and is a trained, licensed clinician; a coach works on goals, habits and decisions with someone who is already functioning reasonably well. An AI coach does the coaching job in software: it cannot diagnose or treat anything, it has no clinical training and no duty of care, and it is the wrong tool in a crisis. If you are in crisis, or thinking about harming yourself, stop here and contact a mental health professional or a crisis line where you live. Everything below assumes you are not.

What each one is actually for

The clean way to hold the distinction is that therapy works on what is behind you and what is wrong, and coaching works on what is ahead of you and what you want. That is a simplification, and it is close enough to be useful.

A therapist

Treats distress, trauma and diagnosable conditions. A licensed clinician works with your history, your symptoms and your risk, is trained to recognise when someone is unsafe, and carries legal and professional obligations when they are.

A coach

Works forward from where you are: goals, habits, decisions, how you come across at work, what to do about a job you have outgrown. Coaching assumes you are well enough to act on it, because acting on it is the whole method.

An AI coach

Does the coaching job with software, every day and cheaply. It has no clinical training, no license, no duty of care, and no reliable way to notice that a conversation has stopped being about goals.

Where the line falls in practice

Signals that you are in therapy territory: it has been going on for months; it affects your sleep, appetite, work or relationships; it predates whatever is happening now; it comes back whatever you change about your circumstances; it involves grief, trauma, substances, or any thought of harming yourself.

Signals that coaching is the right shape: you know roughly what you want, you are able to act, and the obstacle is planning, habit, nerve, or the fact that you keep making the same decision badly and can see yourself doing it.

A blunter version of the same test: if the question is how do I get there, that is coaching. If the question is why can I not function, that is a clinician.

And if you genuinely cannot tell, that is itself a reason to talk to a professional first. A coach is not qualified to make that call for you, and software is less qualified still.

What an AI coach must not be used for

Crisis, first and most importantly. A language model will keep answering, calmly and at length, long past the point where a trained person would stop the conversation and get someone help. That willingness to keep going is a failure mode, not a feature.

Diagnosis, medication, trauma processing, and anything where being wrong carries clinical consequences. None of it is coaching work and none of it is something software is permitted or equipped to do.

Crystal is built as a coach. It is not therapy, it is not a substitute for therapy or for crisis support, and nothing it says is medical advice. If what you are dealing with belongs with a clinician, the right move is a clinician, not a better prompt.

Using both

Plenty of people see a therapist and work with a coach at the same time, and the two are not competing. One deals with what is underneath, the other with what happens next week.

In that arrangement the coaching stays in its lane: the morning plan, the difficult conversation, the goal you set in January. Which, as it happens, is the arrangement a daily AI coach is best suited to.

Common questions

What people ask about ai coach vs therapist.

Is an AI coach a replacement for therapy?

No. Therapy treats distress and mental health conditions and requires a trained, licensed clinician. An AI coach has no clinical training, no duty of care and no ability to diagnose or treat anything. It is not a substitute and should never be used as one.

How do I know whether I need a coach or a therapist?

If the problem is forward-looking and you are able to act on it, coaching is the right shape. If something has been affecting your sleep, work or relationships for months, keeps returning whatever you change, or involves trauma, substances or any thought of harming yourself, that belongs with a clinician. If you cannot tell, start with the professional.

Can an AI coach help with anxiety or depression?

Treating either is a clinician's job, not a coach's and certainly not software's. A coach may help with the ordinary structure around a life, such as sleep, exercise and planning, which clinicians often recommend as well. That is support alongside treatment, not treatment, and it is no reason to delay getting treatment.

What should someone do in a crisis?

Contact a mental health professional or a crisis line where you live, or emergency services if someone is in immediate danger. Do not rely on an AI coach, a chatbot or any other software in that situation.

Does Crystal offer therapy?

No. Crystal is a coach: Personality looks inward at who you are, Relationships looks outward at the people around you, and Progress looks forward at your goals. It does not provide therapy, diagnosis or crisis support.
