AI coach vs human coach
The comparison is usually framed as whether software can replace a person. The more useful question is narrower: for the thing you actually want help with this quarter, which one shows up often enough, and costs little enough, to be worth buying at all.
A human coach is better at the parts of coaching that need a person in the room: reading your tone, holding a silence, noticing what you are carefully not saying, and adapting to things you never told them. An AI coach is better at frequency and price. Crystal Premium is $49 a month or $490 a year, against roughly $90 a month for a human accountability coach such as GoalsWon, around $300 a month to start with BetterUp, and $200 to $500 an hour to hire a career coach directly. Most people are not choosing between daily coaching and weekly coaching. They are choosing between daily coaching and none.
What each one costs
Price is the part of this comparison that can be checked, so it is worth starting there rather than with the philosophy.
The spread is wide enough that the two options are not really competing for the same budget. One is a subscription, the other is a professional engagement.
Crystal Premium, $49 a month or $490 a year
Coaching every day, morning and evening, for less than a single hour with a career coach. Across a six-month stretch that is about $294.
Accountability coaching, around $90 a month
Services like GoalsWon put a real person on your goals by message rather than in sessions. Cheaper than booking hours, and still a human being reading what you wrote.
Coaching platforms, from around $300 a month
BetterUp and similar platforms start near $300 a month and are usually bought by an employer. You get scheduled sessions with a matched coach.
Hiring a coach yourself, $200 to $500 an hour
That is the common range for career coaching. Published 2026 executive coaching rate surveys put a six-month engagement at $9,000 to $25,000, and the 2025 ICF Global Coaching Study with PwC Research puts the global average one-hour session at $234.
What a human coach does better
A good coach hears the pause before you answer. They notice that you have changed the subject three times, that your voice went flat when you mentioned your manager, that the goal you keep restating is not the one you care about. None of that is in the text you typed.
They can hold a silence until you fill it, which is one of the oldest and most effective things in coaching and something software is structurally bad at, because software is built to respond.
They can also be hard on you in a way you will accept, because you chose them, you are paying them, and they have earned it over months. Software that pushes back reads as a malfunction. A person pushing back reads as the point.
And a credentialled coach carries professional obligations: ethics, confidentiality norms, and the judgement to say that what you are describing is not a coaching problem. An AI coach has none of those.
What an AI coach does better
The honest case for an AI coach is not that it is wiser. It is that coaching only works when it happens repeatedly, and repetition is exactly what a professional engagement prices out of reach.
There are 122,974 professional coaches in the world for roughly five and a half billion working-age adults. Even if every one of them were excellent, the arithmetic does not reach most people.
It shows up daily
A coach you see twice a month is a coach you think about twice a month. Morning and evening check-ins change what the habit is.
It forgets nothing
A human coach has notes and a memory. Crystal has every goal, commitment and reflection you have logged, in one running record.
It is available at the wrong hour
The useful coaching moment is often the night before the conversation you are dreading, which is not when anyone is taking bookings.
It costs a fraction
About 30x less than the low end of a six-month coaching engagement, for coaching every day rather than once or twice a month.
How to choose
If what you need is one hard decision thought through properly with someone who has seen a hundred people make it, buy the hours. A few sessions with the right person is money well spent and no subscription substitutes for it.
If what you need is to keep doing something for six months, buy the cadence. The failure mode there is not a lack of insight, it is a lack of anyone asking on a Tuesday.
Plenty of people do both, and they are not really in conflict: the sessions set the direction and the daily coach keeps the week honest in between.
Common questions
What people ask about ai coach vs human coach.
Is an AI coach cheaper than a human coach?
Substantially. Crystal Premium is $49 a month or $490 a year. A human accountability coach runs around $90 a month, BetterUp starts near $300 a month, and hiring a career coach directly is commonly $200 to $500 an hour, with a six-month engagement at $9,000 to $25,000.
What can a human coach do that an AI coach cannot?
Read a room, hold a silence, notice what you are avoiding, and adapt to things you have not said. A credentialled coach also carries professional obligations and can recognise when a problem is not a coaching problem at all. Those are real differences, not marketing concessions.
Can you use both?
Yes, and it is the arrangement that makes most sense if you can afford it. Sessions with a person set direction and handle the hard calls. A daily AI coach keeps the weeks in between from quietly going missing.
Will an AI coach replace executive coaching?
Not for the work executive coaching actually does, which is a trusted person challenging a senior leader in private. What it replaces is the coaching nobody was buying, because at $234 an average session most people were never going to buy any.

Does AI coaching work
There are three questions hiding inside this one: does coaching work, does the mechanic an AI coach performs work, and does any particular product do it well. The first has a decent research base, the second has a good one, and the third is mostly companies marking their own homework, Crystal included.
AI coach vs therapist
These two get compared because both involve talking through your life with something that asks questions back. The difference is not tone, format or price. It is what each one is for, who is qualified to do it, and what is supposed to happen when a conversation turns serious.
What AI therapy is, and is not
The phrase "AI therapist" is searched several times more than every term in the AI coaching category put together, which tells you a lot about what people want and nothing about whether it exists. Crystal does not sell a therapy product and is not one. This page exists because the term is confusing, and the confusion is the part that does harm.
AI career coach
Career coaching is the one kind of coaching most people have seriously considered buying, usually at the worst possible moment and usually at $200 to $500 an hour. An AI career coach is worth understanding for the part it is good at, which is the preparation, without mistaking it for the part it is bad at, which is everything involving other people.
