Crystal

Among 36,560 Crystal Enneagram assessments scored for a wing, seven of the nine types lean to one wing by a margin between 56/44 and 65/35, Type 8 is nearly settled at 88.5% 8w7, and Type 9 shows no detectable lean at 50.2% 9w8 against 49.8% 9w1.

Wings are usually described as a matter of degree, a flavour that varies from person to person. Scored at this size the types look more decided than that. Seven of the nine have a clear majority wing, from 55.8% for 6w5 to 65.1% for 1w2, which is a consistent two-to-one-ish split rather than the even spread the phrase “a bit of both” suggests. It is a majority and not a rule: on those seven types between a third and a fifth of people come out the other way, and the counts for the minority wing are in the table.

Type 8 is the exception in degree and it is not close: 88.5% of Eights come out 8w7, which makes 8w9 the most heavily minority wing in the framework and 8w7 the closest thing to a wing you can predict from the core type alone. Whatever an Eight’s second influence is, it is nine times out of ten the Seven.

Type 9 is the exception in the other direction, and the only one. 50.2% 9w8 against 49.8% 9w1, on 833 Nines, which is a coin flip within the margin the sample size allows. For Nines the wing genuinely is an open question, and for nobody else here is it.

The leans also point somewhere. Ones and Threes both lean toward the Two wing, Fours and Sixes both toward the Five, Sevens toward the Eight, and the Nines’ near-tie goes the same way by a fraction. Set out as contests between neighbours, Two, Five and Eight win both of theirs and Three, Four and Nine lose both of theirs. Read carefully that is a pattern in what this assessment scores rather than a discovery about the Enneagram, and it is the kind of regularity a framework’s own literature has no way to see without a sample this size.

The practical answer, for the question that brings most people here: 4w5 is the more common Type 4 wing at 62.1% against 37.9% for 4w3. 5w6 beats 5w4 at 61.5%, 6w5 beats 6w7 at 55.8%, 7w8 beats 7w6 at 62.0%, 1w2 beats 1w9 at 65.1%, 2w1 beats 2w3 at 62.2%, and 3w2 beats 3w4 at 60.6%.

Method

  • Each row counts completed Crystal Enneagram assessments whose result recorded a dominant wing, one row per completion. Every completion in this sample carries a wing, so the eighteen rows account for all 36,560.
  • Shares are within a type, not across the framework. 62.1% for 4w5 means 62.1% of Fours, and each type’s two wings total 100%. Nothing here is a share of all nine types.
  • The assessments span April 30, 2020 to October 2, 2026.
  • Staff, demo and test accounts are excluded, along with the 131,717 accounts created in the fake-signup burst of July 2026.

What this cannot tell you

  • Self-selected sample. These are people who chose to take an Enneagram assessment online, not a population.
  • This is the subset of Crystal Enneagram assessments that were scored for a wing. It is not a cut of the 709,128 completions behind the type distribution study, and a figure from one should never be combined with a figure from the other.
  • The type mix in this sample is not the type distribution, and the row counts should not be used to derive one. Nines are 2.3% of the wings counted here against 13.0% of those 709,128 completions, and Ones are 19.8% against 8.7%. Nothing on this page revises how common any type is.
  • These people lean more intuitive than Crystal’s wider corpus. Among those who also took the 16-type assessment, this group is 63.4% intuitive against 55.0% across all 406,736 completions, so a wing split measured here is a split among these people.
  • Type 9 rests on 833 Nines, the smallest base in the table. A gap of 0.4 points at that size is well inside what chance alone would produce, which is why this reads as no detectable lean rather than as a split that is exactly even.
  • A wing is assigned by comparing two adjacent scores, so a consistent lean may describe how the assessment weighs those neighbours as much as it describes the people answering it.
  • The tradition itself does not agree that everyone has one dominant wing; some teachers hold that both are available and that the balance shifts. This measures what the assessment scored, not which account of wings is correct.
